Weekly general waste collection
Your general waste bin is either green, or red lidded, and is used for general household rubbish. General waste bins should be on the kerb by 6am on the day of collection (or the night before), and removed within one day of collection.
When is my next collection?
Your general waste bins (green or red lid) are emptied on the same day each week, even on public holidays such as Christmas Day.

You have two size options for your general waste bins:
A $74 discount applies to the 80 litre bin, and it is perfect for waste wise households, singles, couples or small families.

To ensure items can be processed efficiently, please be aware of what goes in your bin.
General waste guidelines
General waste bin lids are changing to red
From November 2021 we will be starting to changeover our green general waste bin lids to red. The bin lid colour changeover will bring Maroondah in line with the Australian standard bin lid colours and will mark the start of the changeover of all our bin lid colours to meet Australian Standards. This change is happening to meet the requirements of the Victorian Government’s Recycling Victoria Policy, released in February 2020, which outlines that all Councils will need to standardise their bin lids by 2030.
The changeover of the general waste bin lids will happen progressively over the next 10 years and will occur:
- At the start of a new service
- When a replacement bin is required in the case that a bin has been damaged and is not able to be repaired
- When a bin is lost or stolen
- Where a lid needs to be fully replaced. Please note, we can sometimes repair a lid rather than replace
Please note: to reduce plastic waste, we will not be replacing bins or bins lids that are in good condition.
Standard bin colours help to promote the correct use of general waste, recycling and organics kerbside bin collection services and supports consistent education and messaging around the use of kerbside bins across Victoria.
What you can put in your general waste bin
Find out how to get rid of all your unwanted waste and household items using our alphabetical guide (A to Z).
We accept:
- rubbish, nappies, ceramics, meat and food scraps (bagged or wrapped)
- window glass, mirrors, Pyrex and light globes (must be securely wrapped for safety)
- non-recyclable plastics such as plastic bags or polystyrene (bagged or wrapped)
Please ensure your waste is wrapped securely and that you do not overfill your bin (the lid must close completely). Unsecured waste can blow into drains and into our waterways.
We do not accept:
- batteries
- recyclables
- hot ashes
- chemicals
- garden organics
- syringes
- liquids
- wood
- unwrapped vacuum dust or polystyrene beads
- building renovation material
- bricks, soil or rubble.
Secure your waste
Please secure your waste. Please ensure your waste is wrapped or bagged securely and that you do not overfill your bin.
Loose waste can stick to the walls of your bin and spill when tipped. Here are some ways to reduce your use of plastic garbage bags and safely secure your household waste:
- Reuse plastic packaging such as bread bags, frozen fruit and vegetable bags, and rice and pasta packaging.
- Reuse paper bags, boxes and newspaper to wrap waste.
- Use compostable and biodegradable bag alternatives.
Putting your bins out
Your bins need to be:
- on the kerb by 6am on the day of collection, or ideally the night before
- removed within one day of collection.
Your weekly general waste will still be collected on a public holiday, even Christmas Day!
Placement of your bin
Waste collection trucks have a mechanical lifting arm, so bins need to be positioned to ensure the mechanical arm can reach and lift.
Please place your bins:
- near the kerb or roadside with the wheels nearest to the house or property
- 30cm (about 1 foot) away from additional bins to allow space for the mechanical arm to access each bin
- at least 1m away from trees or light poles, this space is needed for safety reasons
- away from parked cars
- outside the truck turning zone – this applies to dead end streets, courts, etc
Where special bin placement instructions apply, please continue to obey these instructions.
Request an additional bin
You can request additional general waste, mixed recycling or food and garden organics bins, or second full suite of bins. Conditions apply, so please contact Council on 1300 88 22 33 to check if you’re eligible.
Dual occupancies, units and flats
Some multi-dwelling developments have a 'share' system for their mixed recycling and food and garden organics bins due to storage and bin placement issues. This is determined on an individual basis by our Waste Management Unit.
Accessibility
Our Rubbish collections in Easy English webpage gives you information that is clear and easy to understand. It is designed for people that find it hard to read, because of a disability or when English is not their main language.
Braille bin stickers
Braille bin stickers are available to residents who are blind or have low vision to help identify:
- General rubbish bin
- Mixed recycling bin
- Food and garden organics bin
The stickers measure 10cm x 2cm and can be stuck to the lid, the side or front of the bin.
Stickers can be collected from Council’s customer service centres at Realm and Croydon. If you or someone you know needs a sticker to be posted, please email maroondah@maroondah.vic.gov.au or contact us on 1300 88 22 33 or (03) 9298 4598.
