Reignite Croydon - Laneway Lights project

Laneway closure notice - the laneways next to Subway and LaBocca on Main Street in Croydon will be closed during preparation works for this project. Temporary pedestrian detours are in place from Monday 15 July to Monday 1 September. Pedestrians use southern detour via Devon Street or northern detour via laneway next to ANZ Bank.

Get ready to experience Croydon in a whole new light!

The Reignite Croydon – Laneway Lights project is set to illuminate three laneways adjacent to Main Street, Croydon with captivating artwork, showcasing the talent and creativity of local artists.

Local talent Jasmine Grace will present an interactive installation that reflects the pulse of life through illuminated convex mirrors. As pedestrians pass by, the mirrors will animate with dynamic patterns, engaging viewers in a dance of light and motion.

Melbourne-based artist Alexander Knox will bring a touch of mystery to the laneway with a kinetic neon light piece. Inspired by the area’s rich natural history, Knox’s artwork will capture the swaying motion of Wallaby Grass, creating a mesmerising visual experience.

Collaborating on a celebration of Indigenous flora, artists Kirsten Baade and Alinta Koehrer (Wurundjeri/Yorta-Yorta) weave together traditional craft and modern technology.

Adorned with local floral motifs, their four lightboxes will illuminate the laneway with vibrant colours and captivating designs.

Sam Songailo’s steel archway artwork will stand as a beacon of renewal and transition. Through intricate patterns and LED lighting, Songailo’s creation will transform the laneway, offering both visual delight and a sense of safe passage for pedestrians.

Reignite Croydon, a collaborative effort between Maroondah City Council and the Victorian Government, is set to shine a light on Croydon’s laneways in winter 2024.

Stay tuned for updates on this illuminating project!

About the Reignite Croydon - Laneway Lights project

As part of Maroondah City Council’s vision for the creation of vibrant and connected communities, the Reignite Croydon - Laneway Lights project sits within the broader context of enhanced infrastructure and public art in the Croydon precinct, including the recently completed Devon Street car park and the future Level Crossing Removal project.

The proposed activity focuses on light-based installations by contemporary artists in up to four laneways adjacent to Croydon Main Street, situated between the Devon Street car park and Main Street. The aim of the project is to create commission opportunities through an open call to artists to provide dynamic lighting installations in the laneways that add vibrancy and colour to the area and improve safety for pedestrians at night. The project is jointly funded by Maroondah City Council and the Victorian Government, through the Living Local program.

Five artists have been commissioned to work on this project, with a projected installation date of March 2024. The artists, listed below include a range of highly experienced public artists, both from Victoria and interstate and an emerging local artist. In addition to the artistic program a First Peoples mentee opportunity has been developed for this project: Wurundjeri/Yorta-Yorta artist Alinta Koehrer will be collaborating with Brisbane-based artist Kirsten Baade on the development of lightboxes on the theme of local Indigenous flora.
