The arch is an historical motif traditionally associated with symbolic meanings such as transition, transformation, and passage. Richly patterned and adorned with rhythmically programmed lights, this artwork interrogates our relationship with these forms. In the context of the Reignite Croydon project, the archway artwork taps into these traditional symbolic meanings and provides a powerful visual representation of renewal and transition.
Sam Songailo's work encompasses painting, installation, video, sound, and sculpture. Deeply influenced by digital technology and electronic music, he adopts algorithms and concepts from these disciplines, shaping his approach to both physical and pictorial space. Often highly immersive and realised on a monumental scale, his work accentuates the compositional elements of line and space in a form that recalls both the modernist grid and digital networks. The artist studied Visual Communication at the University of South Australia, graduating in 1999 with a graphic design major. Since 2007 he has worked predominantly within the realm of visual art exhibiting broadly across Australia and realised numerous public artworks.
