The City of Maroondah was created in December 1994, when the former Cities of Ringwood and Croydon joined together with small parts of North Ringwood, Lilydale and Kilsyth South. Its area is 61.4 square kilometres
Maroondah has nine wards; Barngeong, Bungalook, Jubilee, McAlpin, Tarralla, Wicklow, Wonga, Wombalano and Yarrunga. Each ward is represented by one councillor who is elected for four years. One councillor is elected to serve as Mayor for a year.
There are just over 115,043 people living in Maroondah - more than would fill the MCG stands!
There are 46,870 households in Maroondah with an average of 2.54 people in them.
There are 31 neighbourhood community and local shopping precincts and over 9,500 businesses in Maroondah.
We maintain 572 parks and reserves which are home to 52 sporting ovals and 133 public playgrounds.
Maroondah's swimming pools, golf courses and leisure centre get more than 1 million visitors each year, and nearly 3 million library books are lent out in a year.
Maroondah City Council plants 30,000 trees and shrubs every year, and if you combine the number of trees in public and private land, you'll find there are more than 500,000 trees in Maroondah.
More than 20,000 dogs and cats are registered with Council each year.
Maroondah has a vast diversity of flora and fauna. There are 13 distinct habitat types within Maroondah and 82 sites of biological significance which are protected by the Maroondah Planning Scheme. Maroondah is home to 18 mammal species, 23 butterfly species, 116 bird species and 9 frog species, including the rare Victorian smooth froglet.
Maroondah is a great recycler - 14,548 tonnes of garden organics are collected and mulched each year, alongside 12,272 tonnes of recyclables.
Maroondah has its own local community radio station, Eastern FM - 98.1 FM.
Maroondah's first settlers were the Wurundjeri people, and the first European settlers arrived in the 1830s. They planted fruit trees and Maroondah became a well known orchard and market garden area.
Each year there is a Maroondah Festival with rides, live music, community performances and lots more. It's the biggest in the Eastern suburbs!
Maroondah has lots of volunteers who help other people, including those who deliver nearly 65,000 Meals on Wheels every year.
The City of Maroondah has facilities and assets worth over $1.87 billion!
