Flooding
Maroondah has experienced a number of severe storm events in relatively close succession over the past decade, highlighting the changing nature of our climate and the need to be aware of the risks posed by flooding.
In 2023 Council consulted with the community on flooding in Maroondah. Visit Your Say to view the Maroondah flood map, watch an informational video and find more.
Council's drainage network
Council's underground stormwater drains have been designed to provide flood protection for rainfall events up to a 5 year ARI (average recurrence interval) storm, which is consistent with the industry standard.
For extreme storm events when the capacity of the drainage network is exceeded, stormwater follows natural valleys and drainage paths, often along roads, through reserves and also through private properties.
Flood education
Council works with Melbourne Water and other authorities to support community education and awareness in flood-prone areas, including the Victoria State Emergency Service’s FloodSafe and StormSafe programs.
In a flood, the most important thing is your safety.
For assistance with flooding, phone the Victoria State Emergency Service on 132 500, or if your situation is life-threatening call 000.
