Council was recently successful in a grant application for funding from the Australian Government’s Thriving Suburbs Program, for the $15 million Croydon Main Street Revitalisation project. The Australian Government will fund $7.5 million alongside Council’s own funding commitment of $7.5 million. The grant application was informed by Council’s ongoing engagement with traders and their needs and aspirations for Main Street now and into the future.

March 2025 update

Council will commence preliminary assessment work on this project from April 2025. The works are required to develop the project design and will include assessing underground services and topographical features of the area, and documenting existing structures and conditions. Council’s dedicated arborists will also be assessing trees for health, viability and safety.

Traffic management will be in place during preliminary works to facilitate a safe working environment for our community and contractors. These works are weather dependant and delays may be expected. Council will work with contractors to minimise delays where possible. Council thanks the community for their patience during these exciting works.

Thriving Suburbs Program

The Thriving Suburbs Program aims to build better cities and more liveable suburbs. The Croydon Main Street Revitalisation project will support Council’s long-term vision and planning for Maroondah, to ensure our infrastructure and facilities continue to meet the needs of our community. With funding now secured, Council will further develop the project, which will include undertaking trader and community consultation in 2025.

During the development phase of the project, Council will continue to undertake localised footpath repairs in Croydon Main Street, to ensure community safety and amenity. This may include temporary asphalt patching works where brick paver replacement is not able to be undertaken.

Croydon Community Wellbeing Precinct

The Croydon Main Street Revitalisation project will also improve connections between Croydon Main Street and the Croydon Community Wellbeing Precinct (CCWP). The CCWP will be a place of connection and a beacon for wellbeing which will feature integrated indoor and outdoor spaces that provide opportunities for activation, inspiration and empowerment. It will be home to several vital Council and community services, attracting thousands of visitors a week.

The next stage of this project is currently progressing, with preparatory early works underway to prepare the site for a new Cultural Hub, which will be home to a new library, Council Service Centre, performance and events space, multipurpose rooms and a cafe.
