Volunteering
Council can help you make a rewarding and valuable contribution to the Maroondah community. Volunteering offers lots of benefits to both you and the community. When you volunteer, you can:
- learn new skills
- meet new people and form new relationships
- gain experience and expand your career choices
- give back to the community
- gain personal satisfaction
- build self-confidence
- have fun.
We offer volunteering opportunities across all service areas and currently have over 400 volunteers involved in different areas throughout Council. It doesn’t matter if you can spare only a few hours a month, or if you are able to volunteer each week, all offers of assistance are very welcome.
Meals on wheels volunteers
Volunteers are crucial to the operation of every Meals on wheels program. Over 100 volunteers drive the cars and deliver the meals and other food services to clients.
Sometimes the service is received for a short time, however in most cases the meals are provided on an ongoing basis for people who for various reasons are unable to prepare food for themselves.
Contact the Meals on Wheels coordinator on 03 9298 4540.
Planned activity groups and social support volunteers
The Home and Community Care (HACC) program includes planned activity groups and social support volunteers at Council’s Kerrabee Club located at 3-5 Louisa Street, Croydon.
These programs provide activities for isolated people, including the aged and those with disabilities, in order to enhance health and wellbeing. The activities provide respite for families or carers.
Planned Activity Groups is a weekly social and recreational program to support people to maintain their independence and connection with their community.
Social support programs provide a variety of activities for isolated, frail older people to enhance their health and well-being. Activities include day trips, visits to local libraries and shopping centres.

Glen Park Oaks community garden volunteers
Glen Park Oaks community garden at 30 Glen Park Road, Bayswater North, was officially opened in 2013 within Council’s Glen Park Reserve, as part of the former Bayswater North Community Renewal Project.
It now operates under the management of Council, with volunteers giving their time to assist with the operation and use of the garden.
The garden’s concept is quite unique, as it differs to allotment-style gardening. Volunteers can use what is produced from the garden, as can any member of the community. If you have an interest, knowledge or skill in gardening, and would like to make new friendships while gardening, please get involved.
Please note that volunteers must be 18 years or over.

L2P learn to drive program
If you're aged over 25, the TAC L2P program is a fantastic opportunity to give back to the community and help young people get their 120 hours of driving practice.
The TAC L2P Program helps disadvantaged Victorian learner drivers aged 16 to 21 with no access to a supervising driver or vehicle to gain the 120 hours driving experience required to apply for a probationary licence.
The program is FREE for both young people and volunteer mentors (the car and all fuel is provided).
Find out more about the program and apply to be a driver mentor.
How does it work?
The TAC L2P Program matches learners from 16 to 21 years old with a fully-licensed volunteer driver and practice vehicle to help them gain driving experience.
As well as being matched with a volunteer mentor, learners participating in the program have access to up to seven free driving lessons throughout the program with a professional instructor. The program focuses on helping young people become safe, confident drivers. It also provides an opportunity for young people to interact with positive adult role models, gain confidence and move towards social independence.
