Maroondah Disability Advisory Committee
The Maroondah Disability Advisory Committee was established to provide a strong link between Council and people with a disability.
The Committee is one of four Council Advisory Committees that provide advice and input on social issues and support the work of Council in working towards the community vision outlined in Maroondah 2040: Our future together.
The committee provides strategic advice and advocacy to promote social inclusion and participation of people with a disability in the community.
Role of the committee
Maroondah Disability Advisory Committee exists to:
- Advance the social policy and community wellbeing related “Key Directions” within Maroondah 2040: Our Future Together.
- Advise Council on the development, implementation and review of the Maroondah Health and Wellbeing Plan, and associated action plans, social policies and related strategic documents.
- Provide advice to Council on policy, plans, programs, service development and planning issues in relation to people with disabilities at a strategic and operational level.
- Promote community participation and engagement involving people with a disability, their carers and families within the Maroondah municipality.
- Establish a collaborative partnership between Council and key community stakeholders.
- Provide input into the development of strategy, policy, partnership activities and advocacy efforts in relation to disability related issues and opportunities in Maroondah.
- Inform and advise Council on key disability related policy issues and act as the peak Council advisory governance body on disability matters.
Members
The Committee consists of:
- three Councillors, appointed annually by Council
- a minimum of three representatives from local community service agency partners
- a maximum of six community representatives with disabilities and two carers of people with a disability. These appointments are made through an expression of interest process for a four-year term. It is anticipated that a broad range of disability types be represented on the Disability Advisory Committee such as: sensory, physical, intellectual, neurological, acquired brain injury and/or mental health
- Council officers to provide administrative support and technical advice.
Meetings
Meetings are held 3 to 4 times each year and are conducted in accordance with meeting procedure principles as prescribed by Maroondah City Council.
As part of their responsibilities, committee members also provide input to stakeholder engagement activities to the support the strategic activities of Council.
