Australian Citizenship Ceremonies in Maroondah

Citizenship certificate

Attending a citizenship ceremony is the final step in the journey to become an Australian citizen and receiving your Certificate of Australian Citizenship.

While the ceremonies fulfil requirements under Australian citizenship law, they also provide an opportunity for the City of Maroondah to officially welcome its new citizens.

Invitations to attend citizenship ceremonies will come from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, not Maroondah City Council.

Please note that children 15 years and under don't need to attend a citizenship ceremony to receive a Certificate of Australian Citizenship, but if they would like to attend they would be very welcome.

How to become an Australian Citizen

Becoming an Australian citizen means that you are making an ongoing commitment to Australia.  The Department of Immigration and Border Protection website provides a quick guide to what it means to be an Australian Citizen.

Applications

To apply online, please visit the Department of Immigration and Border Protection website.

Application forms are available at Maroondah City Council Service Centres.

When you complete your forms, you will need to pay a fee and send them to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection to be processed.

Australian Citizenship Test

When you apply to become an Australia citizen, you will need to pass a citizenship test.

The citizenship test consists of 20 questions drawn at random from a pool of questions. To pass the test, you must answer 15 out of 20 questions correctly.

Australian Citizenship approval

Once your application is approved, you will be notified by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection in writing and then added to the waiting list of candidates who are required to take part in a citizenship ceremony.

Waiting lists

The Department of Immigration and Border Protection has a long waiting list of successful citizenship candidates waiting to attend a ceremony and receive a Certificate of Australian Citizenship. Due to the length of this list, it can take between three and six months to receive an invitation to a ceremony.

If you urgently need a Certificate of Australian Citizenship, please contact the Department of Immigration and Border Protection on 131 881 as soon as possible. You may need to attend a citizenship ceremony being held at another Council on an earlier date.

Council does not have a list of citizenship candidates who are still waiting to be invited to a ceremony.
