Parent information sessions

Council have planned a series of parenting information sessions in 2017 for parents, grandparents and carers in Maroondah.

These free information sessions will support families in their parenting journeys with children and young people.

Anxiety is here to stay!

Understanding and supporting children and young people with anxiety

Presenter: Jules Haddock

Stress and anxiety are a part of everyday life and serve a sound purpose in how we manage the world, but Stress can become so chronic, that it can develop into a crippling anxiety disorder, often without prior awareness.

Session outline:

  • Understand the relationship between stress and anxiety.
  • Demystify anxiety disorders as treatable illnesses.
  • Discuss signs and symptoms.
  • Explore support and self-management strategies in dealing with anxiety over a life time.
  • Practical strategies in supporting a child to understand and manage their anxiety within a recovery context.

Suitable for: Parents, grandparents, carers, teachers, educators and anyone working with primary & secondary school aged children and young people. Covering primary and secondary school aged children

Making sense of the senses 

Understanding sensory integration

Sensory processing skills form the foundation upon which your child does all of their developing and learning. Yet, this topic remains largely unknown and misunderstood.

Paediatric Occupational Therapist Hannah Gamble will explain how the sensory system works and what the developmental and behavioural implications are when children are not processing sensory input well.

In addition, you will understand how to maximise children’s ability to learn in preschool and school environments, as well as pick up some tricks of how to regulate children in these contexts.

Suitable for: Parents, grandparents, carers, teachers, educators and anyone working in Early Childhood and Primary School Aged Services.

Guiding children’s behaviour and beyond

Do you feel that you are constantly telling your child what to do and what not to do? Do you wonder why your child behaves the way they do and you’re confused as to what to do about it? This session examines possible triggers for challenging behaviours and looks at a range of strategies in guiding children’s behaviour in an ever changing and rushed world.

Learning outcomes:

  • Identify what triggers children’s behaviour.
  • A seven step plan to support your children and to encourage cooperative behaviour.
  • Gain strategies that support positive interactions and builds resilience in children.

Suitable for: Parents, grandparents, carers, teachers, educators and anyone working with children aged 0-8 years old.

Advocacy and collaboration

In this workshop you will be equipped with advocacy strategies.

We will look at why you are the best advocate for your child, utilising supports and networks, positive collaboration with educators and how to build a strong partnership with education staff.

We will also share real life situations and how to confidently and wisely advocate for your child's rights and inclusion.

Suitable for: Parents, grandparents, carers of children aged 0-12 years old.
