Maroondah Housing Strategy 2016

The places we live banner

Council has adopted a strategy to plan for future housing in Maroondah, taking extensive background research into account along with a wide range of input from community engagement activities.

The Strategy responds to the latest social, economic and environmental trends and aspirations of the community.

As we plan for the future, it will be important to consider the need for greater housing diversity, increasing the availability of affordable housing and improving the quality of the places in which we live.

The Maroondah Housing Strategy was adopted by Council on 27 June 2016.

The key issues and options

All of the community and stakeholder aspirations point to liveability being the most important factor in housing in Maroondah.

The research emphasises the challenges of growth impacting on our ability to maintain and enhance this most valuable feature of Maroondah: liveability. The places we live should be diverse, comfortable, accessible, affordable and have a reduced environmental footprint.

The Strategy identifies five focus areas to address the key issues of affordability, diversity and infrastructure that relate to future housing demand in Maroondah.

Focus areas

Key direction #1
Responding to social, economic and demographic change

Key direction #2
Managing growth and changing housing needs

Key direction #3
Protecting and enhancing our environment and neighbourhoods

Key direction #4
Improving affordability, accessibility and social housing opportunities

Key direction #5
Building on and improving the planning framework

An Issues and Options Paper was prepared to inform development of the strategy and consider potential key directions and priority actions. The document can be found below:

Community feedback

In developing the Strategy, Council sought community input on housing issues through a range of community open house events, stakeholder focus groups and an online survey. Information gathered from these engagement activities was used to inform development of the Maroondah Housing Strategy.

A report on the findings from the community engagement process can be found below:
