Litter Prevention

Litter is unsightly and pollutes our waterways. Litter is washed down stormwater drains to creeks and waterways and ends up in Port Phillip Bay. Litter smothers the habitats of native animals and creates a human health risk from objects such as broken glass or syringes. Victorian councils spend over $50 million cleaning up litter each year.

What you can do to reduce litter

Make sure you dispose of all waste correctly - either in a recycling or waste bin.

  • Do not over fill your bin - make sure the lid is closed properly
  • Do not dump rubbish - use regular Council hard rubbish collection service for larger items
  • Report litterers - if you witness someone littering, report them to the EPA Litter Report Line on 1800 35 25 55
