Energy Conservation

The two main ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are to reduce the amount of energy we consume and to source energy using renewable resources such as solar and wind.

There are many different ways of being more efficient with our energy use. These often result in significant cost savings as a consequence of reducing energy use. The following are just some examples of simple initiatives that can be implemented in the home, business or school:

  • Install 5 star energy efficient appliances, heating, cooling and hot water systems
  • Replace standard incandescent globes with compact fluorescent globes
  • Make sure your home is adequately insulated
  • Turn off lights, appliances and heating and cooling when not required
  • Use cold water for washing clothes
  • Hang out clothes to dry rather than using a dryer
  • Set the thermostat for your heating and cooling between 18 and 21 Celsius in winter and between 25 to 27 Celsius in summer
  • Use public transport and walk and cycle for short trips
  • Install a solar hot water system or high efficiency hot water system - rebates are available through Sustainability Victoria
  • Purchase accredited Green Power from your energy retailer
