Waste and recycling in Maroondah

Waste truck

With some Australian waste and recycling procedures in question following the ABC’s Four Corners report on Monday 7 August, Maroondah City Council would like to reassure our community that we take the stewardship of all the waste it collects, receives and transports very seriously.

Council collects waste which it transports to landfill; green waste and recyclables are taken to materials recovery facilities and composting facilities, see below:

  • Landfill waste delivered to the Hanson Landfill at Wollert.
  • Green waste delivered to Garden State Mulching Services where it is distributed for composting.
  • Recyclables are delivered to the Polytrade Material Recovery Facility at Dandenong South, where materials are sorted and sent for reprocessing at other facilities. This includes collected glass being used to produce new bottles.
  • Hard waste is taken to Lysterfield Transfer Station where any wood and metal is separated for recycling. Mattresses are recycled through TIC Mattress Recyclers, TVs and computers are recycled through ToxFree, and whitegoods, including fridges which are degassed, are recycled for the metal.
