Enjoy a lazy Sunday with Live at Realm

19 July 2017

Simon York

Sundays in July and August are warming up inside at Realm, thanks to the entertaining and diverse line-up of performers scheduled for the Live at Realm music series. Enjoy a leisurely Sunday afternoon with live music from local talent, along with a bite to eat from Caffé Stazione with friends and family.

Kicking off the line-up is guitarist and vocalist Simon York, who will perform on Sunday 30 July, between 1pm and 2.30pm.

Born in Byron Bay, Simon has been a performing and recording artist, in Australia and internationally, for 20 years. His musical journey is an interesting and eclectic one. Training in classical and jazz piano and vocals, as well as in classic and Flamenco guitar and in musical composition, Simon was performing at gigs, including supporting some big-name acts, between the ages of 16 and 20, after which he stopped music and walked away disillusioned and burnt out. However, he returned to music in his 30s, with a renewed energy and a determination to do things differently, and that he has achieved.

Simon took his guitar, keyboard and vocal skills and toured the world for the past 17 years – performing at varied places, from the ski fields of Switzerland to the hottest hotels and jazz bars of Europe. He relocated to Ringwood North with his wife, artist Zetta Kanta, six months ago. The couple have embraced the growing arts community across Maroondah.

“I’ve always felt a strong connection to Melbourne, but now it’s home,” says Simon.

Simon’s music has been described as having strong bluesy overtones and a classical influence, as well as being diverse – with influences ranging from traditional jazz to contemporary dance rhythms such as house, hip hop, dub step and even disco. His voice has been described as emotive and strong. This eclectic mix may be unsurprising given that Simon’s dad was a jazz saxophonist and his mum a classical pianist; that he started his career in indie rock and punk bands; and spent some time living in the Spanish Canary Islands.

“I like wild music, but I like gentle music too. At Realm, I’ll be a little more acoustic. The audience will hear the Latin jazz and Spanish guitar influences in my guitar playing, including artists like Baden Powell and Paco De Lucia. There’ll be some folk influences and a very bluesy feel, as well as some original compositions,” says Simon.
