Do you have views on gaming in Maroondah? Have your say

21 June 2017

Council is currently preparing a new Gambling Policy to ensure that its work in this area reflects current community needs and attitudes.

Maroondah Mayor Councillor Tony Dib said Council is seeking the views of the community on gambling patterns and attitudes to gambling.

“Council is conducting on online survey about gambling-related issues. We want to ensure that our latest Gambling Policy reflects what is going on in the community. We are keen to hear from anyone affected by problem gambling, as well as those with views on gaming machines in Maroondah. The survey closes on Sunday 25 June,” Cr Dib said.

“While Council is not the responsible authority when it comes to gaming machines in Victoria, we do get to have our say on behalf of our community. When existing gaming machine venues want to increase the number of machines they have, or when a new venue wants to include gaming machines, Council is notified,” he said.

“We then conduct a social and economic impact assessment and provide a submission to the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation, before they have a hearing and make a determination,” Cr Dib explained.

“This is why it is important that we have a clear understanding on the community’s views on gambling and how it is impacting our society.

“Problem gambling is something that affects individuals, families and communities in a multitude of ways. Council is committed to playing its part to assist those in the community for which gambling is a problem.

“More broadly, Council is dedicated to advancing the health and wellbeing of our community, so we want to ensure that we make a positive contribution in this area.

“Once the draft policy is developed, it will be presented to Council and will be on public exhibition for further comment,” Cr Dib said.
