Proposed Coolstore Road, Croydon level crossing removal

Media statement from Mayor, Cr Tony Dib

5 June 2017

The level crossing at Coolstore Road, Croydon is not on the Victorian Government’s list of 50 level crossings within the current level crossing removal program.

However, Council is keen to see a grade separation of this level crossing and is advocating for the Victorian Government to include the crossing removal, either in the current program or as the Victorian Government’s first priority once the current program of 50 crossings are removed.

Late last year, Council commissioned a report to assist with advocacy efforts and future community consultation. This report is scheduled to be presented to Council at its meeting on Monday 26 June.

The independent engineering investigations have identified a range of options and are considering the feasibility of each of these. So far the early indications are that a below ground option is not feasible due to the height of the railway bridge at Mt Dandenong Road.

The investigations are continuing, as we identify how the various grade separation options will function in the precinct, including the interaction with the surrounding local roads and pedestrian connections; Main Street; Croydon Central; Council’s new Croydon Town Square; and how they may improve car parking in the precinct.

While the investigations have been underway, we have been making representation to the Victorian Government, and working with the key stakeholders in the precinct.

While Council has no position on the alignment, we are very excited by the possibilities the removal of the level crossing will create for the Croydon and wider community, including an upgraded railway station and bus interchange, improved vehicle and pedestrian links, improved car parking capacity and a fully integrated Croydon Town Centre.
