Eastfield Dog Park – Pawsitively Fun

Dog park opening

Maroondah’s four-legged friends will have their very own playground when the city’s first dedicated dog park officially opens in Croydon this Saturday, May 13.

The eagerly anticipated exclusive dog park, located on Eastfield Road, was road-tested earlier this week by Maroondah Council’s dog park quality control team – Milo the Labrador, and Jo and Sam the Chihuahuas – and given a big paws up!

Dogs and their owners are invited to join in the celebrations between 11am and 2pm this Saturday.

Bring along your four-legged friend for all the excitement and enjoy a range of activities, including free advice from the Animal Aid behaviour team, a lure course, pet health checks and discount microchipping vouchers from Animal Aid, sausage sizzle, as well as show bags with information and special treats for you and your dog.

Mayor Tony Dib said that up until now there had only been off-leash parks in the region but no fenced-in area specifically for dogs.

“Council has worked with the community over a number of years on this project, and I’m sure everyone will agree it has been well worth the wait,” Cr Dib said.

He said the $200,000 Council-funded project was created based on the feedback received from the many dog owners in Maroondah.

“With 13,000 registered dogs in our city, there was strong demand for a safe and accessible location where people could bring their dogs to exercise and socialise with others.

“A number of locations for a dog park were considered by Council and the community before it was determined that Eastfield Park was the preferred location,” Cr Dib added.

He said anticipation from the community during the construction phase had been nothing short of overwhelming, with over 300,000 people engaging with a single post about the dog park on Council’s Facebook page.

Fenced dog parks have several advantages, including allowing dogs to enjoy a recreational space, fenced off from other park users.

“The result is a wonderful park. It is fully fenced with double entry gates and a range of elements to keep dogs of all sizes entertained, including agility equipment and a time-out zone for younger dogs,” Cr Dib said.

The design also features dog training and open runabout areas, seating, sand and rock scramble zones, and amenities such as a drinking fountain, and dog litter bag dispensers and bins.

Due to an anticipated large turnout to this weekend’s opening, Council asks that the public keeps this in mind if choosing to bring along their dog.

All dogs must be under voice control at all times while inside the park, as this is an off-leash dog park.
