Time is running out to visit the Pure Talent exhibition at Wyreena Community Arts Centre.

The exhibition is one part of Council’s Pure Talent initiative which is held annually during National Youth Week. The initiative is made up of a visual arts exhibition at Wyreena Community Arts Centre and the performance showcase at Karralyka. It is aimed at showcasing the talents of Maroondah’s young people.

Last Thursday night, the work of 14 Maroondah young people was showcased on the Karralyka stage.

Councillor Rob Steane, who officially opened the event, said it was inspirational to see the talents of these young people.

“For many of these performers it was the first time they have ever stood up on stage to perform in a professional theatre. This is an amazing accomplishment and I hope they are all extremely proud of what they have achieved,” Cr Steane said.

The artworks and performance pieces were developed by 2016 VCE students in Maroondah as part of creative subjects including studio arts, visual communication and design, textile design, drama and music.

Caleb Landner, from Ringwood Secondary College, said he had loved every minute of his involvement in Pure Talent.

“It is an amazing experience to get a chance to have your work screened to an audience of this size. Everyone has been really supportive and engaging,” Caleb said.

Melba College Year 12 students Madi Lous and Grace Cisilm both performed vocal pieces at the showcase.

“The fact we have this opportunity is nice, that there’s the effort made for us kids to get this sort of experience is wonderful,” Madi said.

Grace agreed, saying anyone who gets the opportunity to participate next year should jump at the chance.

“Go for it! Everyone is so supportive and you don’t feel judged at all. Even if you are nervous, just do it!”

The Pure Talent Exhibition which features the work of 19 young emerging visual artists is on display until Thursday 27 April at Wyreena Community Arts Centre 13-23 Hull Rd, Croydon.
