A Maroondah Youth Services free drop-in centre is providing a safe and welcoming space for young people to be themselves, share ideas and be inspired.

EV’s Hangout, located at EVs Youth Centre in Croydon, is a chilled-out space where young people aged 12-25 can access a quiet study space, with loads of resources and youth-friendly activities including a pool table, big screen TV with Wii, Xbox and PS3, as well as snacks and drinks, and free Wi-Fi and computers to browse the net.

The program is now open again for Term 2 from 3pm-6pm every Thursday during the school term.

AJ, 15, says EV’s Hangout is a chance for her to catch up with friends and meet like-minded young people in a supportive, non-judgemental environment.

“I first heard about it while I was attending one of EV’s pool party events two years ago and I’ve been coming ever since,” she said.

“I like it because the staff are welcoming and inviting, and it’s really relaxed. It’s fun and friendly…I would say to others thinking about it - give it a go.”

Aside from being a great place to chill out, EV’s Hangout also has a team of qualified youth workers on hand to offer support and help to young people – anything from how to get involved in the community, advice on getting a job and school, to help with dealing with personal or family issues.

Eighteen-year-old Croydon student Tarsha drops into the centre every Thursday after school, and says she enjoys the centre for its social aspect.

“It’s a great place to hang out and talk to the youth workers about how school’s going, life, music and (making) general conversation really,” she said.

Tarsha, who is working towards completing a VCAL Certificate II in Community Services with the aim of becoming a qualified counsellor working with teens, takes inspiration from the centre’s youth workers.

“If I have a paper assignment to do I will work on it (at the centre) and being a community services subject I find that I can always ask for help,” she added.

EV’s Hangout can be found at 212 Mt Dandenong Road, Croydon and is only a 6-minute walk from Croydon train station.
