Maroondah City Council has a new Mayor, following an election by Councillors at a Council Meeting held on Wednesday 9 November.

Cr Tony Dib was unanimously elected to the position by his fellow Councillors.

The election of Mayor took place immediately following the introduction of the new Council for the 2016-2020 term.

Cr Dib was sworn in as Maroondah’s 21st Mayor during a special ceremony in front of members of the community, Council staff and his fellow Councillors.

Cr Dib said it was an honour to be elected to represent the Council in its first year of the new four year term.

“It is an honour and a privilege to represent the Maroondah community as Mayor, and I look forward to providing strong leadership to the new Council in its first year of the new term,” said Cr Dib.

“I have been a Councillor for ten years during which time we have achieved many great outcomes for the Maroondah community. I thank the residents in Arrabri Ward who have put their trust in me to continue this work,” said Cr Dib.

“I am very much looking forward to working with the Councillors and the community to ensure that Maroondah continues to be a great place to live, work and play,” said Cr Dib.

“Maroondah is lucky to have Councillors with such a diverse knowledge base and a passion to bring about positive changes for our community,” Cr Dib said.

This is Councillor Dib’s fourth term as Mayor of Maroondah. He was Mayor in 2007-2008, 2010 -2011 and again in 2014-15.

At the Council Meeting, Councillor Nora Lamont was elected to the role of Deputy Mayor, a new role for Maroondah. The position will provide support to the Mayor in what will be a busy first year of Council.

As Mayor of Maroondah, Cr Dib is the patron of the Maroondah District Scout Association, the Bone Marrow Donor Registry of Victoria – Croydon Branch, the Red Cross Calling Appeal – Maroondah Area, and the Ringwood Pipe Band.

During Cr Dib‘s term of office new multipurpose pavilions will be completed at East Ringwood and Proclamation Park which will be used by a range of community and sporting organisations; the design will be completed for the new HE Parker Multi-sport complex, along with the redevelopment of the existing Heathmont pavilion; and construction will start on the new Croydon Town Square which will create new open space, improved pedestrian linkages and a heart for Croydon Town Centre.

“In addition, many road projects will either be completed, or work will start, which will greatly assist how residents and commuters move in and through Maroondah. These include the intersection at Oban Road and Maroondah Highway; $1.2 million Canterbury Road slip lane, signalisation and parking entry upgrade at Heathmont shopping centre; and the $8 million project at the intersection of Maroondah Highway and Dorset Road,” said Cr Dib.

“We will continue to work with the Victorian Government on significant railway projects, with the Heatherdale Road crossing removal and new station due to open in 2017, and Council will continue to advocate for the railway crossing at Coolstore Road in Croydon to become the 51st level crossing removal project,” said Cr Dib.

“Each of these exciting projects will bring many new opportunities to Maroondah,” Cr Dib said.

Cr Dib invites members of the Maroondah community to attend Council’s regular meetings to learn more about the processes of local government.

“The meeting schedule for the remainder of 2016 and for 2017 was also confirmed at the 9 November Council meeting, and I would encourage residents, business people and students to attend and take an interest in local issues,” Cr Dib said.

“Some may think voting in Council elections is the only way for them to participate, but civic responsibility can extend to being a vital presence when Council conducts its business,” Cr Dib said.

“Councillors are also available at the end of every meeting for residents to speak with them about local concerns,” Cr Dib said.

“Along with the Deputy Mayor, Cr Nora Lamont, and my fellow Councillors, I look forward to representing Maroondah, and meeting many members of our community during my term as Mayor,” Cr Dib said.
